The two and a half year,
$30 million project consisted of the construction of four additions and
renovations to the existing science center, to create a new 190,000
square foot state of the art teaching and research facility in Biology,
Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Physics.
The work had to be
performed in six sequences in order to keep the University operable 24
hours a day, seven days a week. The construction included the removal
and replacement of the existing roof, replacement of all utilities and
lab gases, the installation of a reverse osmosis water purification
system and the installation of some ninety fume hoods.
Of particular note was
the creation of a four-story atrium that rises through the middle of the
building and leads to the gateway or portal of each department. The
extremely challenging project has turned the otherwise plain building
into a state of the art showplace. |
